GPA Scale Converter: GPA is called Grade Point Average. It is the sum of all your subject grades that you have obtained throughout your high school career. These total grades are then divided by the total number of credits. The schools generally repost this GPA on a 4.0 scale. However, performing these tasks manually is a tiring process and you can take it easy by using the GPA Scale Calculator. You can refer to the common GPA conversions, ways to find GPA, and a lot more in the below article.
Calculating the GPA is not a difficult task. You can easily use the below-provided formula to calculate the GPA for the desired academic year.
GPA = Sum of (Grades x Credits)/ Total Credits
Calculating GPA is an easy task. You can refer to the below steps to know how to calculate the GPA.
Overall and cumulative are the two methods used to calculate the GPAs. Let’s understand them in detail:
Overall GPA
is the average of your semesters throughout the academic year. It gives you an idea about the entire year's performance. The overall performance of the students can easily be obtained using this calculation method. It is accumulated using the formula:
Overall GPA = Sum of Cumulative GPA / Number of Cumulative GPA (total)
Cumulative GPA
It is the average of a specific academic period. It gives you information about a particular period of academics. Overall performance cannot be calculated as considered only for the specific period. It is calculated using the formula:
Cumulative GPA = Grade Point (total) / Credit Hour (total)
Honors and AP are the types of courses that will help you increase of GPA. In this kind of class, the GPA scale is higher as compared to regular classes. You can refer to the below chart for AP, IB, and Honors, classes' numerical and Letter grade scales.
Letter Grade | Numerical Grade | GPA | Honors GPA | AP/IB GPA |
---|---|---|---|---|
A/A+ | 93-100 | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
A- | 90-92 | 3.7 | 4.2 | 4.7 |
B+ | 87-89 | 3.3 | 3.8 | 4.3 |
B | 83-86 | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
B- | 80-82 | 2.7 | 3.2 | 3.7 |
C+ | 77-79 | 2.3 | 2.8 | 3.3 |
C | 73-76 | 2.0 | 2.5 | 3.0 |
C- | 70-72 | 1.7 | 2.2 | 2.7 |
D+ | 67-69 | 1.3 | 1.8 | 2.3 |
D | 65-66 | 1.0 | 1.5 | 2.0 |
F | 0-64 | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Example 1:
Calculate the Unweighted GPA.
Subjects | Letter Grade | Grade Points |
---|---|---|
Algebra | B | 3.0 |
English | A | 4.0 |
Biology | A | 4.0 |
Physics | B | 3.0 |
World History | A | 4.0 |
Solution 1:
We know that to find the GPA, it is required to add all the grade points together and then divide them by the total number of subjects.
=> GPA = Sum of Grade points / Total Number of Subjects
The sum of grade points = 3.0 + 4.0 + 4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 = 18.0
Number of subjects = 5
=> GPA = 18.0/5 = 3.60
Example 2:
Calculate Weighted GPA
Subjects | Letter Grade | Grade Points |
---|---|---|
Honors World History | A | 4.5 (For an honors class, A means 4.5) |
Biology | B | 3.0 |
AP Algebra | A | 5.0 (Foe an AP class, A means 5.0) |
Physics | A | 4.0 (For a regular class, B means 4.0) |
AP English | B | 4.0 (For an AP class, B means 4.0) |
Solution 2:
We know that,
Weighted GPA = grade points/a a total number of subjects
=> Grade Points = 4.5+3.0+5.0+4.0+4.0
The sum of Grade Points = 20.5
Total Number of subjects = 5
Now, using the formula we get,
=> Weighted GPA = 20.5/5 = 4.
