36 = 2 x 18 + 0
The remainder has now become zero, so our procedure stops. Since the divisor at this stage is 2, the HCF of 400 and 618 is 2
Notice that 2 = HCF(36,2) = HCF(182,36) = HCF(218,182) = HCF(400,218) = HCF(618,400) .
We can take hcf of as 1st numbers and next number as another number to apply in Euclidean lemma
Step 1: Since 661 > 2, we apply the division lemma to 661 and 2, to get
661 = 2 x 330 + 1
Step 2: Since the reminder 2 ≠ 0, we apply division lemma to 1 and 2, to get
2 = 1 x 2 + 0
The remainder has now become zero, so our procedure stops. Since the divisor at this stage is 1, the HCF of 2 and 661 is 1
