We consider the new divisor 60 and the new remainder 40,and apply the division lemma to get

We consider the new divisor 40 and the new remainder 20,and apply the division lemma to get
40 = 20 x 2 + 0
The remainder has now become zero, so our procedure stops. Since the divisor at this stage is 20, the HCF of 500 and 720 is 20
Notice that 20 = HCF(40,20) = HCF(60,40) = HCF(220,60) = HCF(500,220) = HCF(720,500) .
We can take hcf of as 1st numbers and next number as another number to apply in Euclidean lemma
Step 1: Since 188 > 20, we apply the division lemma to 188 and 20, to get
188 = 20 x 9 + 8
Step 2: Since the reminder 20 ≠ 0, we apply division lemma to 8 and 20, to get
20 = 8 x 2 + 4
Step 3: We consider the new divisor 8 and the new remainder 4, and apply the division lemma to get
8 = 4 x 2 + 0
The remainder has now become zero, so our procedure stops. Since the divisor at this stage is 4, the HCF of 20 and 188 is 4
