Notice that 12 = HCF(72,12) = HCF(156,72) = HCF(540,156) = HCF(696,540) .

752 = 12 x 62 + 8
Step 2: Since the reminder 12 ≠ 0, we apply division lemma to 8 and 12, to get
12 = 8 x 1 + 4
Step 3: We consider the new divisor 8 and the new remainder 4, and apply the division lemma to get
8 = 4 x 2 + 0
The remainder has now become zero, so our procedure stops. Since the divisor at this stage is 4, the HCF of 12 and 752 is 4
Notice that 4 = HCF(8,4) = HCF(12,8) = HCF(752,12) .
