Notice that 29 = HCF(58,29) = HCF(145,58) = HCF(493,145) = HCF(638,493) .

Step 1: Since 473 > 29, we apply the division lemma to 473 and 29, to get
473 = 29 x 16 + 9
Step 2: Since the reminder 29 ≠ 0, we apply division lemma to 9 and 29, to get
29 = 9 x 3 + 2
Step 3: We consider the new divisor 9 and the new remainder 2, and apply the division lemma to get
9 = 2 x 4 + 1
We consider the new divisor 2 and the new remainder 1, and apply the division lemma to get
2 = 1 x 2 + 0
The remainder has now become zero, so our procedure stops. Since the divisor at this stage is 1, the HCF of 29 and 473 is 1
Notice that 1 = HCF(2,1) = HCF(9,2) = HCF(29,9) = HCF(473,29) .
